We recently had a chance to “sit” down with Patrik Wallner, a skateboarding videographer born in Germany and raised in New York City. Still living in New York City, he is currently finalizing “Translations”, a skateboarding video which includes his travels to over fifteen countries throughout Asia and Europe featuring new and unique spots which have not been represented in other skateboarding videos to date.

The video will feature: Daniel Hochman, Malcolm Tallgard, Max Beinhofer, Samuel Beyer, Nolan Lee, Patrick Boes, Michael Mackrodt, Chris Pfanner, Lem Villemin, Jeremy Reinhard, Javier Mendizabel, Billy Rohan, Scotty Moore, Alex Mizurov, Josh Zickert, Kieron Brodie, Dany Hamard, Florentin Marfaing and many more.

For more than a year and a half Patrik has been out on the road filming, non-stop from the States, to Europe to Asia. No big budget, no tour bus, only bowls of rice and mopeds. Look for the video to be released in the Fall of 2008. Premieres will take place in both the United States and Europe. We anticipate the video will be sold throughout the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia.

NOW, THE INTERVIEW

Could you talk about yourself and your current video project, explain yourself young man.

I am a Hungarian in blood, raised in the land of the Germans, but moved to the US and the A at an early age. I been filming for years, and finally decided to commit to a full length video with people having parts and the whole deal, that’s how “Translations” came along. It features a bunch of international heads skating in exotic, non-exotic, and even third world countries.

What drives you to travel around the world to video tape kids on useless wooden toys?
Haha… uhm that sounds pretty funny. I kind of feel like when I tell older relative members what I do, that’s what they think of it. But to answer your question, I get a nice satisfaction out of filming. I mean when I film a friend and he lands his line after 2 hours of filming, I get just as exited, and then when your in a different country you multiply that excitement by 3.5, and then afterwards you got a great night with good friends, cheap beers and an unexplored city for you to check out.

What are your top 5 favorite classic skate vids and why for each?
Well I gotta say I love the older classic videos, but since cinematography (which I observe the most) for skate videos changed the last decade I am gonna go with, Photosynthesis, New Deal (7 year glitch), the second Static, Menikmati and Cliche (Bon Appetit).

Photosynthesis cause of the great skaters and the usage of Super 8.
New Deal because of the music, and great skating.
Static II because of the editing and skating.
Menikmati because that video dropped and everyones chin dropped as well.
And finally Cliche because French Fred knows how to make videos so that the are awesome.

Who are your favorite skaters to get footage with and why?

That’s a hard one because I love to film with everyone who has a positive vibe, but I would say all the homies in “Translations” and with the Adidas Euro/USA Team.

What is the best spot you filmed at in your travels?

Finally a question I know off the bat! The ditch in the New Territories of Hong Kong. But actually that spot isn’t the best spot, its kind of rough and has a bunch of holes, but it’s the most incredible looking one. Probably the BEST spot we skated was the Waves in Shenzhen (China).

Who would you really like to film with, some of your current favorites?
I wish Kim Jong Ill would skate and I could film a line with him in North Korea at his palace, I think that’s probably the hardest wish to make reality. Can you guys at skatetheory organize that?

Do you think YouTube/ online video is good for the future of skate videos as we have known them?
Oh yeah YouTube is awesome. Filmmakers spends thousands of dollars to create a Video, and then some idiot thinks he can upload that on YouTube the very next day of the premiere. And that’s not even the worst, they will upload it in the shittiest quality so that anything you might have filmed with a legit camera in High Definition with a nice focus and detail will look like you filmed it with you iPhone… thanks YouTube. Only other good thing Youtube is good for, is laughing. They got some really funny clips up there. You guys ever saw that Karate guy that does a backflip and keeps swinging in Nun-chuks while he is passed out… you know what I mean…
